Hatfield-McCoy ATV Trail System : A Relaxing Trail For Beginners – Joe Joslin Outdoors

ATV adventures are known to be adrenalin-rushing. Going to various terrain and being able to successfully conquer them is an exciting feeling. However, there are times when you just want to ride your ATV to relax and better embrace nature. There are lots of scenic spots in Hatfield-McCoy’s ATV trail that are perfect for that.

The Hatfield-McCoy ATV Trail

I have been through many various adrenaline-rushing ATV trails before but there is something relaxing and serene about the Hatfield-McCoy ATV trail that I find worth re-experiencing. When you just want a chill ride, it’s one of the first places that come to mind.

The Hatfield-McCoy ATV Trail is great for beginners because it is a relatively short and easy trail. However, it still offers plenty of excitement. There are over one thousand bridges spanning the rivers and creeks throughout the course of this trail. There are also thirteen rest stops providing bathrooms, showers, food, and freshwater. This trail is also known for its beautiful scenery, so make sure to take some time to stop and enjoy the view.

My Experience On The Hatfield-McCoy Trail

My original visit to the trail was on a Saturday. However, I quickly learned that weekend visits are not ideal because you can expect heavy traffic with many inexperienced riders. Instead, I suggest that first-timers go on a weekday. There will be fewer people to weave around and it’s easier to avoid accidents.

I would also recommend that you avoid visiting the trail in July and August. Temperatures can get extremely high and there is no air conditioning on the trail.

However, if you do find yourself visiting this trail during the busier months, there is a good amount of shade to be found and the Ohio River provides a nice breeze.

There are several items that you must have with you to enter the trail: helmet, eye protection, and a working muffler. If you plan on staying overnight, make sure to pack accordingly. You can purchase food and drinks at several of the rest stops along the trail. Don’t forget to bring your own water and/or sports drinks.

Lastly, make sure to avoid traveling near dusk or dawn. This is when most of the animals come out. I learned this the hard way when a deer ran in front of me and I was not able to avoid it.

I was lucky that my ATV only suffered a small scratch and the deer ran away. Avoid traveling at these times because you never know what other animals could potentially cross the trail.

I would highly recommend this trail to anyone who is a beginner or wants a relaxing ride through areas of natural beauty. To get there, take I-64 to US 60 and travel for about twelve miles until you see signs leading towards the southern entrance. If you feel like registering, you can go to the northern entrance which is located on Route 92 in West Virginia.

Tips On Exploring The Trail

When exploring the Hatfield-McCoy ATV Trail, there are a few things beginners should keep in mind.

First, always stay on the designated trail. There are plenty of hazards to be aware of when riding an ATV, and you don’t want to end up getting lost or injured because you ventured off the path.

Second, always wear a helmet and other protective gear. This is not only for your safety but also for the safety of those around you.

Finally, take your time and enjoy the ride! The Hatfield-McCoy ATV Trail is a great place to relax and take in some beautiful scenery.
